Blog prompt 3 - how has war evolved from the past to the present?

I think the main difference of war I the past and the war in the present is due to the twin engines that are driving the world today. Youth and Technology. There will be indeed difference in terms of ammunition like there where not much nuclear power or missles in the past compared to that of today. However I think we should focus on the underlying reason for the evolution.
The reason why people are going to war in the past and in the present is different. The young generations and the old generations have different issues that make them angry and have different intention and perspective on war. I also think the problem is that the generations in the past and the generations in the present, with the aid of technology, the young people have no fear to express their discontent and thus results in many heated arguments.
For technology, the use of social media is rising. People can get their information in seconds by the click of their mouse. People behind the computer, like youths, have no fear to say what they want or please without considering other consequences. With this, people can get really offended and when their problems are not solved, they may resort to drastic measures to convey their message.
The youths are the leader of tomorrow and technology is advancing by the second. With both aspects, it is more than enough to change the world.

  1. Another aspect that you should talk about is that with the rise of social media, you can have anonymity by purposely stating a false name. That way, people would have the freedom of speech and that this would be the most genuine feedback that a leader can ever obtain.

The reason why the younger generation is able to speak up is because the society is starting to realise the importance of the younger generation as they are the future leaders. Therefore, people pay more respect to the "leaders of tomorrow".

  2. Good comparison Yu Xiang, on war of the past and now! It shows that you have think much before this post was typed.

Though it will be good for you to give examples of what type of reason they had for war. Is it because of human rights problem? Or is due to the economic crisis? You can also give real life examples like the American Civil War, Cold War etc.

Overall well done, keep up the good work! :)

  3. Hi, I agree with you that the youth of today and the technology drives the world today. The difference it make. With technology, not just better weapons are developed, but it also give rise to social media. You might be wondering, why social media. Is it as powerful as the nuclear bomb? In a way, it is. Look at the uprisings in Eygpt, Tunisia and Bahrain. Social media played a very big and important role.

  4. I think that there is a confusion between revolutions and wars. The revolts in the Middle East are not wars but revolutions whereby the backdated thinking and methods of doing things are being violently phased out. Wars on the other hand are more of territorial disputes or the results of things like political conflicts, strain on bilateral ties, greed or militarily tension. However technology definitely play a part in wars nowadays. This is very obvious if we were to open our eyes and see the difference between a sword and a modern high power rifle. You could have elaborated on the improvements in war technology.
