Literature & Life

Little Boy and the Old Man

Q1) what is the underlying message that is being conveyed in this poem

Answer: The underlying message for this poem is that life goes in a cycle, as a young kid, adults would ignore you as you are just a child, but when you grow into an adult, they would start to treat you with respect. However as you grow old, you become neglected as adults would be too busy to keep them company. Therefore, we should all treat each other with respect in any stage of our life. " what goes around, comes around", if you treat people this way, they would treat you the same way as well.

Q2)Has Shel Silverstein used any particular poetic devices that brings the message more clearly.

Answer: Shel Silverstein used ryhmes in this poem and phrases like " so do I ", I get what you mean" and "I do that too" which brings a point that the old and the young are in the same boat and feels the same way as well.

Messy Room

Q1) Can you say that the poem is humorous? If so how?

Answer: Yes, few phrases like, " i knew it looked familiar" and " you say it is mine?" both are sentences that bring humour to the poem. The dact that he is criticising himself also add to the humour of the poem.

Q2) What aspect of the human character has been highlighted in this poem.

Answer: Huamns tends to be judgemental, the persona has critised the owner of the room but in the end, turns out to be himself.

Cloony The Clown

Q1) Explain the irony in the poem

Answer: When Cloony The Clown tries to be funny, no one laughs but when he trys not to be funny and serious, he is laughed at by many.

Q2) Does Shel Silverson manage to convey some harsh realities in this poem?

Answer: Yes, the fact that the people laughed at Cloony the clown's sad story instead of conforting and emphatising with him is a very harsh reality in life.

Q3) What poetic devices has the poet used to effectively convey his message?

Answer: The poet used ryhmes to make the poem seem lively as it is a poem about a clown, which is supposed to be funny. The poet also uses some repitions of the words like," not funny", " everyone felt sick" and " funny JUST by accident" shows the fact that Cloony has failed as a clown.

My CCA came to my life this beginning of the year and from that day onwards, i had to go for training everyday until 6++pm, reaching home with insufficient time to do work, burning midnight oils almost everyday, no time at all for revisions, scoring poorly for exams.

However would teachers and coaches understand if you miss training or homework is not done? i would really hope they will as they should know the situation we pupils are in, tired of training eveyday, reaching home at night feeling low and exhausted, in no shape to study at all. I have always been wondering, why was fate so cruel to me, i had to train everyday, reaching home at night, too exhausted and tired to do anymore work, while others' CCA is only 1 time a week for 1 hour!! They reach home and play computer while I am running my heart out in the hot sun, homework not done!

I was also thinking, what did i do wrong for tests. I studied so hard while others are busy playing computers but at the end of the day, I still get worse result. My hopes and dreams of getting exempted for tests, after 3 terms of continuous hard work is crushed and destroyed within one day!!

There might be some students facing the same problem and i really hope something would be done about this.

Racial Harmon Day

Racial Harmony day has came and the day was filled wth fun and entertainment. The school has made a few programmes which include:

-Assembly
-Indian Mass Dance
-Cultural Bazare

Firstly for the Assembly, there is a performance by each 4 consortium, performing a dance of the different 4 races in Singapore. There is also a performance by Hwa Chong Instituition and other schools, not to mention a Malay Cultural Perdormance.

For the Indan mass dance, we had so much fun with all the unkowned and weird steps. There was a group of Indian dancers helping and teaching us through these steps which Zihan proved to be a great Idian dancer. After laughs and sweat, we proceeded to the cultural bazare

The cultural bazare was entertaining and fufilling. There were so many stalls( games and food ) such as:
- Pizza
- Spegetti
- Football games with prizes
- other deserts, ( grass jelly, ice jelly cocktail....)

The one that attrated most was the football stall which we would get a prize if we hit up to a certain score. So many people joined this game but all lost except for 3 winners
( Tan we jin 1o3, Tan yu xiang 1o3(me!) and timothy chong 1o4) who got soccer jerseys.

The whole experience was a fun-fufilling one which I am sure most peope will look forward to,
not for parents though if they found out we spent so much on that....

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

This is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson which talks about this lawyer from London called Gabriel John Utterson who investigates the strange case his old friend Dr Henry Jekyll(Dr Jekyll) and misanthropic Mr. Edward Hyde who in the story is called Mr. Hyde.
The book is known for the presence of a split personality, split in the way that within the same person there is both, an apparently good and an evil side, each being different from the other. The book’s impact has made its title into a phrase "Jekyll and Hyde", meaning that a person who is greatly different in moral character from one occasion to the others.

I am going to give you a brief summary for this book. This goes as a lawyer called Utterson, upon hearing from his relative, Richard Enfield, about a sinister who trampled a young girl like a damned juggernaut who then disappears into a door on the street. He then re-emerges to pay off her relatives with a cheque. Lanyon( Utterson's friend) and Jekyll both gave Utterson a letter before Lanyon’s death. The first reveals that Lanyon’s death is caused by the shock of seeing Mr. Hyde drink a potion and as a result, change into Dr. Jekyll. The second letter explains that Jekyll, hoping to separate his good side from his darker side, discovered a way to transform himself only for a period o time into a creature free of conscience, this being Mr. Hyde. At first, Jekyll was delighted in becoming Hyde and rejoiced for the freedom that the creature possessed. However, he found that he was turning into Hyde even his sleep, without taking the potion. At this point of time, Jekyll decided to stop becoming Hyde. One night, the urge gripped him so hard that he immediately rushed out and violently killed Sir Danvers Carew. Horrified, Jekyll tried harder to stop the transformations, and for a time he proved successful. At a park, he considers how good a person he has become as a result of his deeds (in comparison to others), believing he was redeemed. However, before he completes his line of thought, he looks down at his hands and realizes that he has suddenly once again become Mr. Hyde. His ability to change back from Hyde into Jekyll slowly vanished after numerous reasons and was thinking to kill himself or being caught by the police, then that was the end of Dr Jekyll.

My favourite character is Mr Utterson for his intelligence to solve crimes and investigating matters.

From this Story, the main thing we can learn is the way Stevenson carry out his ideas and writing by mostly pairing evil and respectable together as a contrast to their split personalities. Through this book, Stevenson speaks about the respectability and banality of an evil safety lodged in a civil society which cannot be casted out.

Ivanhoe

IVANHOE

This story goes about two rival clans which hate each other and have been battling each other to their deaths. There was a person name King Richard the lion-hearted, though he was a Norman, he tried to restore peace and harmony between each clans but failed to do so.
He then left his throne and kingdom to join the crusades. In the meantime, his brother, john, immediately seized the throne and was careful to retain his crown.
There ware many characters in each side as follows:

Normans: - Prior aymer
- Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert
- Prince John
- King Richard the lion-hearted
- Sir Front-de-Boeuf
- Sir de Grantmesnil
- Sir Philip de Malvoisin
- The Grand Master of the Templars
- The Abbot of Templestowe

Saxons: - Cedric the Saxon
- Princess Rowena, Cedric's ward
- Wilfred of Ivanhoe ( Sir Desdichado )
- Prince Athelstane
- Wamba the Jester
- Ulrica

Others: - Isaac of York
- Rebecca of York
- Locksley of Sherwood Forest (Robin Hood)
- Friar Tuck

The story goes about a group of Normans was riding through a forest when they were struck with a heavy thunderstorm which forced them to take shelter in their enemy's castle, Rother wood. Cedric's ward was a beautiful maiden named Rowena and even the Normans, their enemy, liked her. However, it was a crime for a Norman and Cedric would certainly disallow it. Rowena was bethrolled with Prince Athelstane but whom she loves dearly was actually Ivanhoe, a great knight.
After the dinner was over, a pilgrim emerged from the shadows and grabbed Rowena, it was Ivanhoe! He was not dead as Guilbert claim he was. Cedric, Ivanhoe's father banished him from the castle as he broke the law of loving Rowena even when she was bethrolled to a man she didn't love. Hence, he had to disguise himself as a pilgrim to keep his identity a secret and they could see each other without anyone knowing.
There was a tournament which both clans put their best knights forward to battle each other. Guilbert, a great warrior, and 5 others represented the Normans and 5 Saxon knights challenged them. Saxon lost and just then, Desdichado ( Ivanhoe ) stepped up and humiliated all the Norman knights including Guilbert and was crowned champion. The second round begins and when Desdichado ( Ivanhoe )was outnumbered, a black knight came and rescued him, defeating the Normans. Just as he was about to receive the crown, Ivanhoe collapsed, senseless, to be helped by Rebecca, Isaac the merchant's daughter, who was a great healer, helped him.
Guilbert was angry and plotted a plan to destroy the Saxons as well as Ivanhoe but was foiled by De bracy of Norman by a mistake but then captured the Saxons to be held hostage for a ransom. One Saxon escaped and asked Robin Hood for help. Rebecca, Isaac the merchant and Rowena were help hostage and Isaac was tortured to give his gold. Guilbert liked Rebecca whom he thought she was gorgeous and wanted to woo her although Rebecca hated him.
Robin Hood and his troops attacked and destroyed the Normans, the Saxons safe. Only Rebecca was taken away by Guilbert and got in trouble with the Norman authorities by bringing back women. Rebecca was later sentenced to trial and had to be burnt alive if a knight from Saxon do not win a battle against Guilbert. Guilbert on the other hand was really remorseful for bringing Rebecca to such a state and when the trial began and guilbert was dead and Rebecca was rescued.

My favourite characters Ivanhoe for I admire his affection for Rowena and his bravery to save Rebecca

Rowena and Ivanhoe lived happily ever after and Rebecca and Isaac left.

Through this story, it talks about sacrifice which guilbert had to save Rebecca from being burnt. I can infer from the story that Ivanhoe did not kill guilbert as he was too weak, guilbert killed himself just to make sure Rebecca was no burnt alive. There were also many obstacles for Ivanhoe to be with Rowena but in this story, true love conquers all.

Goal 2

When Santiago munez is signed to real Madrid , he has became more popular, more attractive and more lovable. Fans around the world are crazy about. Santiago has also improved a lot. He now plays with the top players around the world. He even is striving hard for a place as a first team regular alongside football stars such as Raul, David beckham , Ronaldo..... He became the media favourite and fans favourite. However, all of these achievements needs to put in a lot of Effort. Without 100% dedication, total commitment and effort, not to mention their self morales and fighting spirit within them, they will not be standing where they are now. He is at the biggest football club and his dream club he wishes to be in. Yet, being just a poor countryside lad, he is a superstar in the making.

From these two books I have learnt many great lessons and I would like to share them with you. Most of all, everyone should have a goal in like just like Santiago. Dream big but realistic and remember that if you work hard, you will gain more and fufilling. Know your purpose in live and make it a fighter spirit in you to drive your motive in life and make you achieve to greater heights, living the dream.

I admire Santiago as he is just like a living example of a person with goals on life. From a poor, not famous lad changed to a fans favourite, media target, is really something to be proud of. However, this all started...........WITH A DREAM!

GOAL! ( English Book Review )

<< GOAL >> by Robert Rigby

This book Goal has been also made into a movie, the main character, Santiago Munez - a young Latino in Los Angeles and his only one dream in life: to play football. He has skill, flair and determination which make the marks of a good soccer player. This story is a gripping tale of trail and tribulations, tragedy and triumph, set against the back drop of the world's most popular sport.

This story goes by a young Latino started off playing for club Americanitos and caught the attention of a scout of the English premier league club, Newcastle United. A scout named Glen.... Glen soon contacted Santiago and spoke to his club owner/ manager Erik Dornhelm of Newcastle United.

However, Santiago's father does not support his dream of becoming a soccer player as he feels that is a stupid and unrealistic job/ career. Further more, he should get a better job, disallowing him to go to Newcastle United. His father decision made Santiago fall out with him and forced him to leave home and start a new life at England.

When he reached Newcastle United, he received many setbacks and problems, such as his medical conditions, asthma. The nurse Roz who later became his girlfriend treated him and made his asthma conditions improve. He also made a good friend called Jamie who helped him during training and problem he faced alone.

At Newcastle, he gradually became the star and the media and fans are crazy about him.

This all started with a dream. This tells us that we each have to have a GOAL in life. Just like Santiago Munez who dreams of playing soccer as his profession and has great hopes of his future. We must have determination and do not stop and give up when struck by obstacles as we have friends who came help us through these times.

I would very much like you all to read this book as it gives us valuable life experiences and examples. Hope you enjoy it.
