GOAL! ( English Book Review )

<< GOAL >> by Robert Rigby

This book Goal has been also made into a movie, the main character, Santiago Munez - a young Latino in Los Angeles and his only one dream in life: to play football. He has skill, flair and determination which make the marks of a good soccer player. This story is a gripping tale of trail and tribulations, tragedy and triumph, set against the back drop of the world's most popular sport.

This story goes by a young Latino started off playing for club Americanitos and caught the attention of a scout of the English premier league club, Newcastle United. A scout named Glen.... Glen soon contacted Santiago and spoke to his club owner/ manager Erik Dornhelm of Newcastle United.

However, Santiago's father does not support his dream of becoming a soccer player as he feels that is a stupid and unrealistic job/ career. Further more, he should get a better job, disallowing him to go to Newcastle United. His father decision made Santiago fall out with him and forced him to leave home and start a new life at England.

When he reached Newcastle United, he received many setbacks and problems, such as his medical conditions, asthma. The nurse Roz who later became his girlfriend treated him and made his asthma conditions improve. He also made a good friend called Jamie who helped him during training and problem he faced alone.

At Newcastle, he gradually became the star and the media and fans are crazy about him.

This all started with a dream. This tells us that we each have to have a GOAL in life. Just like Santiago Munez who dreams of playing soccer as his profession and has great hopes of his future. We must have determination and do not stop and give up when struck by obstacles as we have friends who came help us through these times.

I would very much like you all to read this book as it gives us valuable life experiences and examples. Hope you enjoy it.

A typical day for Me

Everyday, I was awaken to the incessant ringing of the alarm, much I as hate it, I woke up. I brushed my teeth or it will stink and carried on with my breakfast. Then I head of for bus. Taking to my friends then.......woke up! Still tired, I dragged my heavy feet as I trudged wearily to my classroom.

There I see Zihan and Jack, giggling at the sight of them. But then few seconds later...BOOM, I fl back to slept, to be awoken by the chairman or monitor, it was time for flag raising ceremony.

After that, we have reading period where Zihan will...... Anyway, the lessons with Mrs. Anu will be always filled with fun and laughter then head for recess where we have to go through the daunting slope, which 'someone' has fell before.

To wrap it off with training, cross-country has really energy consuming exercises and countless number of kilometers to run but it was good and healthy.

The times I had was always fun as I laughed non-stop with friends. It was also tiring after training.

This is a typical day for Me.

Memories of school Days

The Son is in Secondary School by Hwa Chong Institution

The monitor badge shine gloriously
Under the resplendent sun
A day was not finished
Unless I am done

Noise filled the class
As scoldings followed
All was silent
As the teacher bellowed

The teacher left
It was my turn
They would not listen
They would not learn

Hard as I try
They're still making a din
Not to mention the amount of dirt
Engulfing the bin

The day's over
Students are free to roam
Relieved as I was
I can go back home

Poem Analysis

The writer has great hopes for his future in his school, there were ups an downs in his school, good times and bad times such as when black crows try to interrupt
when they sing the National Anthem and maintaining his shoes white. His school had all kinds of interesting stuffs such as bare thighs of hardworking scouts which he found rather amusing. On Chinese New Year his teacher, Mrs. Lee, actually wore a sarong kebaya sang Bengawan Solo. And it was Chinese New Year, not other Malay traditional days!

Singapore was too small, it is the capital of its own. His school was really interesting and once, his best friend shaded all 'A's during the test for his Multiple-choice paper
In the photograph, he closed his eyes and he really cherishes this photograph which shows he really treasures his times in school, with his friends.

In conclusion, the writer thought his school was rather amusing, interesting, fun and he cherishes and treasures the times in his schooldays.

NYGH AND HCI's track and field

CSM
CSM
For our annual NUGH AND HCI's track and field CSM (combine sports meet) 1O3 has took part in many events especially me, Zihan and Jack.
Jack
-400m
-800m

Zihan
-javelin
-400m

(I do not why but Zihan joined javelin but he did not throw it before. However, on that day, the throw coach went to Zihan and felt his "muscles" and said it was "good" and meant for javelin, he had high expectations of Zihan but when Zihan threw it, the coach was like_____________. Shocked to say the least, when he saw the javelin spinning in the air and overturn.)

Advise from javelin pro MRS ANU did not seem to help much as Zihan still got disqualified. If you did not know.... Mrs Anu is a professional javelin thrower in her younger days. (Do not be mistaken, Mrs. Anu is still very very very young)

We also got many medals
Jack
-400m 1st
-800m 2nd

Me
-800m 1st
-300m 3rd

For the 3000m I ran, I did not know why but I flunked it and I lost by a mere 0.17seconds and 0.63seconds from the 1st and 2nd runner.

4x100m
1O3 ruled for heats, the runners are as shown
1st-Lam Zihan
2nd-Tan Yu Xiang
3rd-Kevyn Yong
4th-Jack tan

We did very well although we had a nasty fall but still emergered victorious for the heats. We couldn't have done it without good teamwork

4x400m
We got 1ST for 4x400m and runners are as shown
1st-Lam Zihan
2nd-Jack Tan
3rd-Kevyn Yong
4th-Tan Yu xiang

As the whistle blew, Zihan, as the first runner ran like the wind, but faced with strong opponents from the sprints track and field like kee Sian etc....
Although we were the 3rd, 3 more rounds to go, we really have to give credit to Jack Tan as he really "CHOING!!!!!!!" and caught up all the way, being first, 2 more rounds to go and kevyn maintained the lead while I finished off , scared to be overtaken by other runners such as Clarence, the last runner.
However, everyone did their best and we won because of teamwork and team spirit.

On Friday, 14th May, we have our 4x100m finals and hope you will support us and Mrs Anu wanted to bring her dog "Zeus" to make us run faster. We would try our best to make 1O3 proud!!!!

Introduction:
Characters: Dad, Mom and B.B

DAD-doesn't like to have children after little Timmy died.
- Dad doesn't wants to go through all that HELL with another sick child.
(I would like to emphasize on the word "HELL" as this clearly shows that the father of B.B is annoyed and frustrated with children and Mom's pregnancy makes him
Feel worse.
-relationship with B.B very close.
(Confiding secrets to him such as his football dreams and aspirations but not to his wife.)
Has many problems that he could not share to his wife as their relationship is strained and there are disagreements and arguments between them.

MOM-loves children

B.B-Hates fights between parents and has no one to confide in to his problem as his parents are always quarrelling.
-very filial and mature
-has great emotions
(Cried a lot that night)

Taximan's story

- Father and lay choo's relationship is not very good and Lay Choo seems to hates the father.
- father strict and do not understand his daughter
Visa-versa
Daughter is stubborn, do not understand father.
-lack of trust in the end

Common Theme

In both Stories, they talk a lot about relationships between

We can also refer these stories to a similar story village by the sea

Hwa Chong Track n Field

On 14th April 2010, there was our anual Nationals Tack and field competition. Sprinters, jumpers, throwers and pole vaulters came down to the famous event, not to mention half of the secondary one classes. 1O3 was also selected and hence, we made our down Chua Chu Kang Stadium to witness this extraordinary event.

The event started with high jumpers and students throwing javaline. Hwa Chong outdone the rest in Javaline and high jump too. In the end, one Hwa Chong student got 1st! Now came the much anticipated event, the track event. Mrs Anu, Zihan and I was chatting and had a bet who would win. Mrs Anu began talking about how GREAT indians were and how fast they were. So Mrs Anu bet on a Indian girl, me on a hwa Chong girl and Zihan, as usual, the prettiest he could find there ( so desperate )! Mrs Anu was indeed smart and the indian girl won.

Later, many races took place and had even more bets. This time, it was Jack to play. We bet and I won the bet 4 times in a row! However, the B division boys had their best 4x100m relay which they have been winning for many times. So, having some information from Jack, I was sure that Hwa Chong would win. Thus I said to Mrs Anu:" If Hwa Chong don't win, you can beat me up."

In the end Hwa Chong lost and Mrs Anu.............
